(VOVWORLD) - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired the 20th session of the National Steering Committee on Combating Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing in Hanoi earlier this week. The meeting was connected online to 21 coastal provinces and cities.

The Prime Minister emphasized the determination to fight against IUU fishing for the sustainable development of the fisheries sector.

If a fishing boat loses signal, patrols must check right away, PM Chinh said, adding that relevant agencies must act firmly and punish all violations without exception.

The Prime Minister asked provinces to help fishermen with job replacement and provide them with food support. He also asked the Ministry of Defense to strengthen patrols in offshore and border areas and guide fishermen to fish legally. Local authorities must control boats entering and leaving ports, prepare reports for the European Commission, along with public awareness campaigns and proper vessel registration, all need to be completed by November 15, stressed the PM.
