Green tourism, which emphasizes environmental protection and sustainable resource use, is a growing global trend in the world and Vietnam is no exception. Lao Cai, a northern mountain province, has been implementing eco-friendly tourism initiatives to preserve its ecological environment and reduce human impacts on the forests, mountains, rivers, and streams which lend their beauty to Sa Pa, Bac Ha, and Y Ty.

Hoang Quoc Khanh, Vice Chairman of the Lao Cai provincial People’s Committee, said: “To attract tourists we are promoting our natural beauty, cultural richness, and the hospitality of locals. This will boost our smoke-free industry and contribute to Vietnam’s sustainable growth.”

Lao Cai authorities are working to engage the local community and private enterprises in developing green tourism.

Cao Thị Ngọc Lan, Vice Chairwoman of the Vietnam Tourism Association, said: “Developing green tourism products is the shared responsibility of local governments, businesses, local communities, and the tourists themselves. Only by coming together can they really drive the growth of green tourism.”

Lao Cai’s destinations have become well-known nationally and internationally. They include the Fansipan Legend Cable Car Resort, which was honored with the titles World’s Leading Cultural Tourist Attraction 2023 and World’s Leading Natural Scenery Tourist Attraction 2023; Sa Pa, ranked among the 50 Most Beautiful Small Towns in the World; and Bac Ha market, recognized as one of Southeast Asia’s most captivating traditional markets.

While the road to green tourism is not without challenges, for Lao Cai, it is the only viable path.
