(VOVWORLD) - Although tsunami alerts remain in effect, Japan’s Meteorological Agency downgraded its tsunami warning late Wednesday, as the intensity of the waves hitting Japan had significantly weakened. The alert level was lowered from “warning” to “advisory”.

According to the agency, the risk could persist for at least another day, so residents in low-lying areas and near beaches and river mouths should continue evacuating.

In the US, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has downgraded the tsunami warning to a tsunami advisory and  says "a major tsunami is not expected to strike the state of Hawaii". Residents who evacuated have been allowed to return home.

In Russia, Sergei Lebedev, a regional minister for emergency situations, said late Wednesday that Russian authorities lifted the tsunami warning for the Kamchatka Peninsula after 11 hours. Warnings for Sakhalin Island and the town of Severo-Kurilsk on the Kuril Peninsula were also lifted.

Igor Medvedev, head of the tsunami laboratory at the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, said tsunami waves triggered by the earthquake in Kamchatka and the Kuril Islands reached heights of 5 to 6 meters. “There is little reason to anticipate new powerful earthquakes of similar magnitude in the near future, as the strongest tremor has already occurred," Medvedev said.

The Philippines and the island nation of Micronesia have determined that the tsunami no longer posed a serious threat.
