Russia's TASS news agency reported that a few people suffered minor injuries, including at Kamchatka airport. The resulting tsunami inundated the port town of Severo-Kurilsk and the Alaid fishing enterprise.
In Japan, the first tsunami waves hit the northern island of Hokkaido, prompting widespread evacuations and the suspension of some East Japan Railway services. The Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology urged residents to avoid beaches, while the Indonesian Agency for Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysics issued warnings of possible tsunami on Wednesday for coastal communities in in Papua, North Maluku, and South Sulawesi provinces.
New Zealand’s National Emergency Management Agency advised people to steer clear of beaches and coastal areas.
