(VOVWORLD) - Poland’s newly-elected President Karol Nawrocki has opposed Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.

In an interview with Hungary’s Mandiner magazine published on Saturday, Nawrocki said Warsaw’s continued support for Kyiv in its conflict with Russia will not overshadow Poland’s national interests and will depend on reaching “compromise and consensus” on historical and economic disputes.

Although Poland is one of Kyiv’s key supporters in the conflict with Russia, it insists that Ukraine acknowledges the atrocities committed by Ukrainian nationalists against Poles during 1943–1945 as a condition for EU and NATO memberships. Poland also opposes the EU’s duty-free trade program with Ukraine introduced in 2022.

Nawrocki, a conservative historian, defeated liberal Warsaw mayor Rafal Trzaskowski in the second round of presidential elections on June 1, securing 50.89% of the vote. He will take office on August 6.
