France, Poland pledge mutual defense in new cooperation treaty

(VOVWORLD) - France and Poland on Friday signed a treaty with a clause committing both countries to mutual support in case of an attack by an aggressor.
French President Emmanuel Macron insisted that the treaty added to the protections in place under the countries' EU and NATO membership as he appeared alongside his Polish counterpart Donald Tusk in Nancy, France.
Macron emphasised that one of the key aspects of the treaty was a clause on "mutual defence" while insisting this was in addition to the protections already offered by NATO and the EU.
Prime Minister Tusk described the treaty as a historic milestone, emphasizing that Poland and France can now rely on each other under all circumstances.

The signing comes amid EU efforts to boost strategic autonomy and strengthen regional security, particularly as concerns grow over a possible reduction in US military engagement in Europe.
