With all votes counted, the commission said that Nawrocki won 50.89% of votes in a tight run-off race against liberal Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski, who garnered 49.11% in Sunday’s election vote.
Nawrocki is a renowned historian and a conservative nationalist and EU sceptic, while Trzaskowski, the mayor of Warsaw, leans towards liberalism, supports the EU, and is one of the close allies of Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
In the first round of the Polish presidential election held on May 18, no candidate secured a majority of the votes. Trzaskowski led with more than 31% of the votes, closely followed by Nawrocki with nearly 30%, while the remaining 11 candidates were eliminated.
