Vietnam, Russia issue joint statement as President Putin leaves Hanoi

(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam and Russia agreed to continue regular and substantive high-level political dialogue, strengthen contacts through party and parliamentary channels, and continue to coordinate actions at inter-parliamentary forums, according to Joint Statement issued on Thursday on the occasion of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s state visit to Vietnam.

The joint statement emphasizes that defense-security cooperation plays a special role in the overall Vietnam-Russia relationship, is not directed against any third party, is highly reliable and completely consistent with the principles and regulations of international law.

The two sides agree to focus on further developing economic cooperation; increase bilateral investment in mineral exploitation and processing, industry, agriculture, machine manufacturing and energy; continue to cooperate within the framework of existing and new oil and gas projects; and expand cooperation in agriculture, fishery and forestry.

Vietnam and Russia agree to coordinate to ensure security, safety and freedom of navigation and aviation and unobstructed commercial activities, support restraint without using force or threatening to use force, and resolve disputes between relevant parties by peaceful means in accordance with the United Nations Charter and international law.

Both sides support the full and effective implementation of the 2002 Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and welcome the negotiation process to soon reach an effective and substantial Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC).

They also agree to strengthen cooperation and support each other at multilateral and regional forums.
