Maduro said, "I am innocent." He told the court he is "still president of my country". Maduro's wife also pleaded not guilty to the charges against her. In addition, Maduro and his wife requested consular visit.
The first court hearing lasted just 30 minutes. The next court date is set for March 17. Maduro has been indicted on four counts: narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine importation conspiracy, possession of machine guns and destructive devices, and conspiracy to possess machine guns and destructive devices.
At an emergency session of the UN Security Council on Monday, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on all stakeholders to engage in an inclusive dialogue and to respect national sovereignty.
US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz said the US’s capture of Maduro “was a law enforcement operation” based on a decade-old conviction and accused the Maduro administration of collaborating with narco-terrorist organizations, affecting the US and the region.
Venezuela’s representative to the UN condemned the US for launching an illegal armed attack with no legal basis, violating the UN Charter by targeting essential civilian infrastructure and kidnapping the constitutional President of Venezuela. Venezuela called on the UN to fulfill its responsibilities and take actions consistent with the organization's Charter.
Representatives from Russia, China, and Colombia condemned the US military operation as illegal. The remaining members of the council emphasized the importance of adhering to international law and the UN Charter.
Deputy President Delcy Rodríguez was sworn in as acting President of Venezuela on Monday, taking her oath of office before Venezuela’s National Assembly. The Venezuelan government will try to maintain political stability and ensure the continuous operation of the state apparatus amid a volatile domestic and regional situation.
