The gunman opened fire at approximately 2 p.m. in downtown Washington, DC. West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey said the two National Guard members have died from their injuries. The suspect is now in police custody and being questioned about their motive.
Spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said the White House is "aware and actively monitoring this tragic situation," and added that President Donald Trump has been briefed on the shooting.
The US Federal Aviation Administration has halted all flights to or from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport due to its proximity to the scene of the crime.
