European Commission Vice President Stéphane Séjourné said “Any threat against a member state is by definition a threat against the EU.”

French President Emmanuel Macron conveyed his solidarity with Spain during a phone conversation with Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Wednesday, in response to the US threat, according to French newspaper Le Parisien.

On Tuesday, President Trump threatened to impose a full trade embargo on Spain for refusing to allow the US to use the jointly run bases at Morón and Rotafor in its operations against Iran and for not agreeing to increase its defense budget as demanded by Washington. "We're going to cut off all trade with Spain. We don't want anything to do with Spain," Trump said.

In response, Prime Minister Sanchez said no to war: “We’re not going to be complicit in something that’s bad for the world and contrary to our values and interests simply to avoid reprisals from someone.”
