(VOVWORLD) - The United States closed its embassies in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait and urged American citizens to leave the Middle East amid escalating tensions involving the US, Israel, and Iran.

The warning followed strikes by the US and Israel on February 28 that reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and dozens of senior officials.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) later announced another wave of missile and drone launches targeting Israel. Tehran’s Defense Ministry declared readiness for a prolonged conflict, stating it has not yet deployed its most advanced weaponry.

The same day, Israel approved plans to reopen its airspace Wednesday evening to facilitate the return of more than 100,000 stranded citizens, with repatriation flights resuming at Ben Gurion Airport.

US President Donald Trump announced that the US Navy would escort oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz if necessary and directed Washington to provide maritime insurance services.
