UK scales back climate finance programs for developing countries

(VOVWORLD) - Several UK climate aid programs for developing nations are facing significant budget cuts, raising concerns about the country’s ability to meet international commitments on climate change and biodiversity protection.

Media reports indicate that major funds worth hundreds of millions of pounds have been scaled down or suspended in parts of Africa, Asia, and South America. Notably, the 100-million-pound Biodiverse Landscapes Fund has seen its target areas reduced from six to two.

Under its 2021–2026 plan, the UK pledged 11.6 billion pounds for International Climate Finance (ICF), including about 3 billion pounds for nature protection. However, the next funding cycle may fall to around 9 billion pounds over five years — a reduction of more than 20 percent.

Civil society groups have urged the government to maintain and strengthen climate finance, including through tax policy adjustments targeting fossil fuel and high-emission industries.
