Senegal urges Vietnam's stronger investment in multiple areas

(VOVWORLD) -  National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man on Thursday held separate meetings with Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko as part of his official visit to Senegal.



At the meetings, President Faye urged Vietnamese businesses to participate in Senegal’s economic development, particularly in digital transformation and consider opening a diplomatic mission in the capital city, Dakar.

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko proposed expanding multifaceted cooperation with Vietnam, especially in agriculture. He affirmed Senegal’s interest in increasing rice imports from Vietnam to ensure food security. The Prime Minister also highlighted the potential for Vietnam and Senegal to serve as effective gateways for goods to penetrate deeper into the West African and Southeast Asian markets.

Chairman Tran Thanh Man reiterated Vietnam's desire to strengthen cooperation in various fields with Senegal, especially in economics, trade, investment, agriculture, telecommunications, and science and technology.

He also urged both governments to improve the legal framework for cooperation, starting with accelerating negotiations on key agreements such as the Investment Protection Agreement and the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement.

The same day, Chairman Tran Thanh Man and Prime Minister Sonko witnessed the signing and exchange of several cooperation documents between the two countries including an MoU on cooperation between the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Senegalese Ministry of African Integration and Foreign Affairs; an MoU on rice trade between Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade and Senegal’s Ministry of Trade; an MoU on agricultural cooperation between Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and Senegal’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Livestock; and a Letter of Intent to establish friendly and cooperative relations between Can Tho City (Vietnam) and Ziguinchor City (Senegal).
