The article said IPU-132 was the biggest international event hosted by Vietnam in 2015, which reflected Vietnam’s development and the increased co-operation between Vietnam’s National Assembly and international parliaments. Themed “Sustainable development goals: Turning words into actions,” IPU-132 reviewed and discussed the implementation of Millennium Development Goals and put forward the global agenda for the next period. Delegates debated several pressing issues regarding cyber warfare, water management, the role of international law in national sovereignty protection without interference in each country’s internal affairs, and human rights. The article said Vietnam’s initiatives at the event were hailed by international friends and even put into some important resolutions of the General Assembly.
The most important outcome of the IPU-132 was the Hanoi Declaration, which indicates the vision, objectives and commitments of Parliaments to achieve global sustainable development goals in the post-2015 period. The Hanoi Declaration will be sent to the UN General Assembly in New York this September.
The article quoted Saber Chowdhury, the IPU President, as saying that as the host country, Vietnam played an important role at all meetings of the General Assembly, and that Vietnam’s contribution to the event will set a valuable example for all parliaments around the world.
