Earlier, canoeists Nguyen Thi Huong and Diep Thi Huong finished first in the women's 500m canoeing doubles event and earned Vietnam's its first gold at this year's SEA Games. 

The same day, Vietnam clinched 2 silvers and 6 bronzes in Taekwondo, Ju Jitsu, and Maruk team blitz, raising the total medals to 10 on the first day of competition.
