From a long-standing border dispute, tensions between the two neighbors have flared into fierce fighting since Thursday, prompting the UN Security Council to hold an emergency meeting on the crisis on Friday.

After a closed-door meeting of the Security Council with representatives from Cambodia and Thailand, Chhea Keo said that Cambodia proposed an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and called for a peaceful resolution of the dispute.

Speaking before the closed-door meeting, Thai Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nikorndej Balankura said Thailand was open to talks, possibly aided by Malaysia.
