13th Vietnam–US Defense Policy Dialogue opens in Hanoi

(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam and the US have agreed to continue effectively maintaining existing dialogue and consultation mechanisms, and to further cooperation in training, military medicine, and United Nations peacekeeping operations.

At the 13th Vietnam–US Defense Policy Dialogue in Hanoi on Thursday, co-chaired by Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien, member of the Party Central Committee, member of the Central Military Commission, and Deputy Minister of National Defense of Vietnam and Mr. John Noh, Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense of the United States, the two sides pledged to continue consulting and supporting one another at multilateral defense forums.

Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien highlighted that cooperation in addressing the consequences of war remains a cornerstone of the Vietnam–US relationship. He expressed hope that such cooperation would continue in line with the agreed road map and proposed increasing public communication about these joint efforts to make the public better understand the Vietnam–US cooperation, thereby contributing to putting aside the past and building a peaceful, cooperative, and prosperous future between the two nations.

The Deputy Minister also welcomed US military personnel to study the Vietnamese language at the Military Science Academy and attend the International Defense Officials course at the National Defense Academy. He reaffirmed that Vietnam consistently pursues its ‘Four No's’ defense policy.

Chien also reiterated Vietnam’s steadfast position of adhering to international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense John Noh emphasized the US's high regard for Vietnam’s role in the region and reiterated the United States’ commitment to enhancing cooperation with regional partners, including Vietnam.

He said Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth had reiterated his support for a strong, independent Vietnam. Praising ongoing collaboration in addressing war legacies, including efforts to locate US soldiers missing in action (MIA) in Vietnam, Mr. Noh noted that these activities reflect the goodwill of the US in promoting a peaceful and constructive ties with Vietnam.

At the conclusion of the dialogue, the two sides inked the official minutes of the 13th Vietnam – US Defense Policy Dialogue and exchanged wartime memorabilia records. A letter from the Vietnamese Minister of National Defense to his US counterpart was also presented, expressing the high evaluation of progress in bilateral defense ties and calling for the US Department of Defense's support for trade and tariff negotiations between the two countries.
