Local resident Tran Van Coi said this is the third time he has participated in a clean up, adding that the beach is now much cleaner and more beautiful.

"Local people are now well aware of the danger of dumping waste, particularly plastic, to the sea. 70% of ocean waste in this area have been collected and this is a long-term effort," said Coi.

The coast guard officers also presented gifts and household appliances to disadvantaged people in Long Dien district.

Luong Thi Hau, a fisherman in Long Hai, said, "The coast guard force instructed us how to take shelter from a storm. They provided us with food and fuel when our vessel encountered a mechanical problem at sea."
