ASEAN Defense Ministers push for early completion of Code of Conduct in East Sea

(VOVWORLD) - ASEAN Defense Ministers on Wednesday issued a joint declaration which highlights the significance of maintaining and promoting a favorable environment for the early completion of an effective and substantive Code of Conduct in the East Sea (known internationally as the South China Sea) in line with international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

The document, adopted at the 16th ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting (ADMM-16) in Cambodia, said the Ministers approved new initiatives regarding cooperation between ASEAN defense forces in controlling cross-border diseases, support to female officers joining peacekeeping operations, the establishment of cooperative ties between defense academies, and cyber security, among others.

The Vietnamese delegation was led by Defense Minister Phan Van Giang.
