The day was proclaimed by UNESCO in 2011 and subsequently adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2021 as an International Day. This year's theme "New World-New Radio: Evolution, Innovation, Connection" is an ode to the resilience and capacity of radio for perpetual adaptation.

World Radio Day celebrates radio as "part of humanity's history," according to the United Nations. Radio has adapted itself over the decades and played a key role in disseminating information to people in remote corners of the world in times of crisis, including the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

In a message to the audience on the occasion of the World Radio Day, UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova said, “At a time of turbulence, radio provides an enduring platform to bring communities together. On the way to work, in our homes, offices and fields, in times of peace, conflict and emergencies, radio remains a crucial source of information and knowledge, spanning generations and cultures, inspiring us with the wealth of humanity’s diversity, and connecting us with the world. Radio gives voice to women and men everywhere. It listens to audiences and responds to needs. It is a force for human rights and dignity and a powerful enabler of solutions to the challenges all societies face.”

As a part of the world radio industry, since its inception, the Voice of Vietnam (VOV) has always been associated with the nation, connecting people at home and abroad, constantly innovating content and formats, and putting the audience at the center. VOV has paid special attention to human resources training and technology investment to create a breakthrough for radio on the basis of digital platform.
