World leaders pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth II

(VOVWORLD) - Condolences are pouring in from around the world following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Britain's longest-serving monarch died at the age of 96, Buckingham Palace announced on Thursday.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was deeply saddened at the passing of Queen Elizabeth, adding that she was “admired worldwide for her leadership and devotion.” The Queen was a good friend to the UN and a reassuring presence through decades of change, Guterres said, adding that her unwavering, lifelong dedication will be long remembered.

US President Joe Biden said that, in a world of constant change, the Queen had been a steadying presence and a source of comfort and pride for generations of Britons.

European Council President Charles Michel said Queen Elizabeth never failed to show us the importance of lasting values in a modern world with her service and commitment. France’s President, Emmanuel Macron, said Queen Elizabeth embodied the British nation’s continuity and unity for over 70 years. Macron remembered the Queen as a friend of France, a kind-hearted monarch who left a lasting impression on her country and her century.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Queen Elizabeth as an inspirational leader, while Germany's President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said the Queen was a woman who shaped the century. Germany's Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said Queen Elizabeth was a source of strength and confidence to her country for almost 100 years.
