Speaker Nguyen Hoai Tuong, Vice Chairman of the Association of Vietnamese Scientists and Experts, focused on analyzing disputes over territory and territorial waters in the East Sea and China’s irrational arguments over its “nine-dashed” line and its groundless territorial claims. Tuong, who is also a member of the group of researchers named ‘the East Sea in France’, introduced several signed documents including the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea.Tuong briefed recent developments of East Sea conflicts, especially China’s large-scale construction in disputed areas and said that the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea remains a legal basis to resolve the disputes.

Participants exchanged opinions about historical and legal documents on Vietnam’s sovereignty over Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagos, the name of the East Sea, and peaceful measures towards resolving the disputes.
