(VOVWORLD) - The Association for the Support of Families of Vietnamese Martyrs has helped locate more than 660 sets of martyrs’ remains and identify nearly 490 martyrs through DNA testing over the past 15 years, the Association reported at a ceremony in Hanoi on Tuesday marking its 15th anniversary.

Association Chairman Hoang Khanh Hung said they are working closely with the US Institute of Peace, US veterans, and American universities to search for mass graves of wartime Vietnamese soldiers and return keepsakes to martyrs’ families.

“War is unwanted but must never be forgotten. The nation made enormous sacrifices for today’s independence and freedom. To date, 530,000 martyrs remain unidentified, including 180,000 whose remains have yet to be found. We must race against time. Though the war ended long ago, the pain still lingers among their relatives,” said Mr. Hung.
