Addressing the UN General Assembly’s special emergency session on Gaza, held in New York from December 4 to 11, Mr. Viet called for an immediate and lasting ceasefire throughout the region and urged the parties involved to release all hostages, including ASEAN citizens, unconditionally.

The Deputy Minister welcomed the efforts of some countries to promote a ceasefire and called on the UN Security Council to seek a compromise and achieve a breakthrough solution to the crisis in the Middle East.

Vietnam’s representative condemned attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure and urged parties to exercise restraint and strictly comply with the UN Charter, international law, relevant resolutions of the General Assembly and Security Council, as well as provisional measures of the International Court of Justice (ICJ). He emphasized the important role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in providing essential support to the Palestinian people and affirmed support for all efforts to help ensure the safe and effective maintenance of UNRWA's operations.

Deputy Minister Viet reiterated Vietnam’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people in exercising their right to national self-determination and realizing their aspiration to become a full member of the UN. Vietnam strongly supports a two-state solution, including the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian State based on the pre-1967 borders in accordance with international law and relevant resolutions of the UN, he said.

At the end of its session, the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly passed a resolution calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza and a resolution supporting UNRWA to carry out its humanitarian relief mission for the Palestinians. Vietnam voted in favor of both resolutions.
