During the talks on Wednesday in Hanoi, the two sides agreed to continue exchanging delegations, high-level and all-level contacts through party and state channels and cooperation between localities.

They said defense and security cooperation is an important pillar. Australia will continue to support Vietnam in training officers and support Vietnam in participating in the UN peacekeeping force.

Governor-General Mostyn applauded the Vietnamese community living and working in Australia, saying people-to-people exchange is a solid foundation of bilateral relations.

The two sides agreed to ramp up economic cooperation, aiming for a trade turnover of 20 billion USD and doubling bilateral investment in the coming years, while increasing access to each country's market with products of each side's strengths.

They encouraged research institutions and scientists of the two countries to cooperate on joint research projects, especially in technology, artificial intelligence, new materials, among others.

The two sides pledged to cooperate closely at global and regional forums. Australia supports the stance of Vietnam and Southeast Asian countries in ensuring maritime and aviation security and safety in the East Sea; and resolving disputes by peaceful means on the basis of respect for international law.

Also on Wednesday in Hanoi, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man met with Australian Governor-General Sam Mostyn.
