(VOVWORLD) - Thirty years ago, the US and Vietnam began a remarkable journey from former foes to Comprehensive Strategic Partners,” wrote US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday in a post marking the 30th anniversary of Vietnam-US diplomatic relations (July 11).

“Today, we recognize this important milestone and reaffirm our commitment to advancing peace, prosperity, and security together for a free and open Indo-Pacific,” he added.

One of the key pillars of this relationship has been cooperation in addressing war legacies, including bomb and mine clearance, dioxin remediation, and the search for missing servicemen, which are powerful symbols of reconciliation between the two nations.

Bilateral trade has grown more than 200-fold since 1995, to 132 billion USD in 2024. Vietnam is now the United States’ eighth-biggest trading partner. Both have strengthened people-to-people exchanges and cooperation in education, science, and technology. Student exchanges and collaborations in research have deepened mutual understanding.
