(VOVWORLD) - United Nations spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric told journalists in New York on Wednesday that the humanitarian situation in Sudan is worsening due to a wave of conflict-driven displacement and a persistent cholera outbreak.

Dujarric said nearly 9,700 people in Khartoum state alone were recently displaced, while in South Kordofan, more than 9,000 people fled Dibebat town because of intense clashes.

About 600 people were displaced from Abu Shouk refugee camp and El Fasher town in North Darfur state just last week, he said.

Dujarric warned that the continuous displacement, deteriorating infrastructure, and a lack of clean water are accelerating the spread of disease.

The UN has called for an end to the conflict in Sudan, unimpeded humanitarian access, and increased international funding to address the crisis in Sudan.
