Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, told a press briefing on Monday that a strengthened, empowered Palestinian government that can administer the whole of the occupied Palestinian territory is critical to achieve the establishment of a fully independent democratic, contiguous, sovereign and viable Palestinian state. He added that this remains the only way to achieve a lasting peace.

Dujarric's remarks followed Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh's announcement of resignation.

Meanwhile, the Biden administration hailed Palestinian Authority's plan for reform as a positive and important step toward achieving a reunited Gaza and West Bank.
