In a prepared speech at a conservative club in Philadelphia, Mr Trump unveiled plans to grow the army by increasing the size of the US Marine Corps, establishing a new missile defence system, and building new ships and warplanes.

He also proposed a new foreign policy focused on advancing America's core national interests, promoting regional stability and an easing of tensions in the world.

Trump's address came against the context of most recent public polls showing Trump and former State Secretary Hilary Clinton in a race to the White House on essentially even ground.

The recent survey by NBC News revealed that the billionaire is ahead of Clinton by 19% among voters who are military and veteran soldiers, winning 55% of supporters.
