The stance of these two member states puts the EU in a difficult position ahead of the upcoming summit at the end of June.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said Sunday that Slovakia will ask for a postponement of the vote on the sanctions package. Slovakia will not support the package unless the European Commission provides a real solution to the crisis Slovakia will find itself in after the complete cutoff gas, oil, and nuclear fuel from Russia.
Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó sharply criticized the proposed sanctions package, warning that it will pose a serious threat to the energy sectors of Hungary and Slovakia, and devastate Central Europe’s economy.
