In a Facebook post after the result was announced, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong congratulated Mr. Murali and said this is not just a win for Bukit Batok, but for all Singaporeans. The government and people are united in building a better nation together, he wrote.

The by-election was called after PAP MP David Ong stepped down in March, citing a personal reason. In the general election in 2015, the PAP of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong won 83 of 90 seats in the parliament.
