(VOVWORLD) - Ho Chi Minh combined Eastern and Western ideologies, beginning in 1923, when he first set foot in the Soviet Union. His thought is still critical to Vietnam in the modern era, according to Professor Doctor Vladimir Kolotov, head of the Ho Chi Minh Institute at St. Petersburg University in Russia, who spoke about Ho Chi Minh thought in the contemporary world to celebrate Uncle Ho’s 131st birthday on May 19.

Kolotov said Ho Chi Minh’s focus on protecting national interests and properly utilizing resources guided Vietnam to victories during wartime and accomplishments in socio-economic development. Ho Chi Minh Thought has been realized by the establishment of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam - a free, developing, and civilized nation on its way to securing an important position in the world.

Kotolov said Vietnam should creatively promote this ideology to protect its legitimate interests in a volatile world, calling this legacy Vietnam’s lodestar for national protection.
