Official sources say the 73-year-old politician is expected to form a cabinet of up to 30 ministers to steer the country through the current economic crisis.
Official results showed Wickremesinghe earned 134 votes in the 225-member parliament. He has been on the post of Prime Minister 6 times. Now as a President he will need to lead the island nation out of the worst political, economic, and humanitarian crisis since its independence in 1948.
He will take over the tenure of his predecessor Rajapaksa in November 2024.
