Sri Lanka’s PM sworn in as interim president

(VOVWORLD) -Sri Lanka's Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesing was sworn in as interim president of the South Asian country on Friday, after the speaker of the parliament accepted the resignation of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Wickremesinghe on Wednesday was appointed acting president by Rajapaksa, who left the country following massive protests demanding his resignation.

Sri Lanka's interim president Wickremesinghe has asked lawmakers to work towards a consensus to form a multi-party government. He said he will follow the constitutional process, establish law and order in Sri Lanka.

Earlier, former President Rajapaksa submitted his resignation after arriving in Singapore.

Parliament will meet on Wednesday to elect a politician to serve out the remainder of Rajapaksa’s term ending in 2024.
