(VOVWORLD) -Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met on Wednesday with Governor-General of Australia Sam Mostyn, who is on a State visit to Vietnam from September 9 to September 12.

At their meeting in Hanoi, the two leaders agreed to continue to strengthen the trustworthy and strategic pillar of defense-security cooperation, while working more closely together in economy, trade and investment, development cooperation, education and training, science and technology, as well as cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

Prime Minister Chinh proposed that both sides take measures to achieve the target of 20 billion USD two-way trade turnover and double two-way investment within the next two or three years as well as expand cooperation and investment in potential areas such as minerals, critical minerals, rare earths, and renewable energy. 

He called for Australia’s support for Vietnam in building a National Population Database and a Vietnam National Data Center; training Vietnamese officials and civil servants; and creating favorable conditions for the community of more than 300,000 Vietnamese people in Australia.

The Governor-General said Australia wishes to increase investment opportunities in Vietnam through the Investment Promotion Office established in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. She agreed on strengthened cybersecurity cooperation and voiced support for Vietnam as the host of the signing ceremony of UN Convention against cybercrime in October 2025. Australia wishes to deepen the defense relationship between the two countries to contribute to peacekeeping, she said.
