PM Hun Sen elected as new CPP President

(VOVworld) – The 38th congress of the Standing Committee of the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) convened on Saturday and agreed to elect Prime Minister Hun Sen as the new President to replace former President Chea Sim, who passed away early this month.

Mr. Hun Sen, 63 years old, is CPP’s vice president since 1991 and the Prime Minister since 1985 to date. Say Chhum, President of the Senate, and Sar Kheng, Deputy Prime Minister and an eminent CPP leader were elected as co-Vice Presidents of the ruling party.

The Congress was held the day after Chea Sim’s cremation on Friday. CPP spokesman Chhim Phalvirun said that the central committee will review the party’s performance in first half of this year and set orientations for the remaining months of the year.
