Palestinians halt bid for UN membership

(Xinhua) - The Palestinian leadership decided to suspend for two months its bid to join UN agencies to give the US time to revive peace talks with Israel, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad Al Maliki said Sunday.

Maliki indicated that US Secretary of State John Kerry had asked for two months to push forward the peace process and Palestine agreed. However, if Kerry fails, Palestine will restart its bid to join the international organizations. In November 2012 the US government opposed the upgrade of the Palestinian status in the UN General Assembly to non-member observer state.
