(VOVWORLD) - The Leaders Summit on Climate opened online on Thursday to galvanize the world’s major economies to tackle the climate crisis. This is the first international event hosted by the US since Joe Biden took office.

President Biden invited to the two-day conference 40 world leaders, 17 of them representing major economies that are responsible for approximately 80 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions as well as global GDP.

The Leaders Summit on Climate is a milestone on the road to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) scheduled for this November in Glasgow, Scotland.

Scientists have been warning that the world is falling dangerously behind in dealing with climate change.

At the invitation of President Biden, Vietnam’s President Nguyen Xuan Phuc will deliver a speech at the summit. Vietnam recognizes the urgency of fighting climate change and wants to add its voice to the call for stronger action.
