The launches were carried out from the Samsok area in Pyongyang between 6:01 a.m. and 6:23 a.m. on Thursday, the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said in a statement but did not provide further details. The JCS added it is increasing monitoring of all developments and that South Korea's military is maintaining a state of readiness for close cooperation with the US.
Japanese Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada said the first missile traveled 350km and reached a maximum altitude of 100km, while the second missile flew 800km and as high as 50km. Mr. Hamada said the second missile followed what appeared to be an “irregular trajectory.”
On Tuesday, Pyongyang launched an intermediate-range ballistic missile believed to have crossed over Japanese territory.
