NA Chairman suggests Vietnam and Australia raise trade value to 20 billion USD

(VOVWORLD) - At a reception Monday in Hanoi for Australian Ambassador Gillian Bird who is beginning her tenure here, Vietnam’s top legislator Tran Thanh Man praised Vietnam’s relationship with Australia and suggested the two sides work to increase economic collaboration, double mutual investment, and raise bilateral trade to 20 billion USD.

He acknowledged the Australian Government’s official development assistance (ODA) of 1.9 billion USD over 50 years and called for continued assistance in essential infrastructure development.

He also thanked the Australian Government for its support for the community of 350,000 Vietnamese living and studying in Australia, and asked Ambassador Bird to support conditions that will allow the Vietnamese community to thrive in Australia.

Ambassador Bird said the Australian Government views Vietnam as an important partner in its Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040. She said it was an honor to attend the opening sitting of the NA's ninth session, and she admires its ongoing efforts in institutional reform, apparatus streamlining, and creation of a better legal environment.
