The truce will last until April 22 to facilitate rescue operations and recovery efforts.

The announcement follows a unilateral temporary ceasefire declared by a coalition of ethnic armed groups to allow relief operations for victims of Myanmar’s earthquake. According to MRTV, the death toll from the disaster has risen to over 3,000, with more than 4,500 injured and hundreds still missing.

Myanmar's military leader, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, is in Thailand on Thursday and Friday to attend the 6th Bay of Bengal Multi-Sectoral Economic and Technical Cooperation Initiative Summit. He is expected to brief regional leaders on the post-earthquake situation.

The earthquake in Myanmar was followed by strong aftershocks that affected Thailand, where a building collapse killed 21 people and left more than 70 others missing.
