(VOVworld) – The ship VP ASPHALT 2, which was attacked by pirates off Singapore’s coast on Sunday, will receive help returning to Vietnam as soon as possible. Representatives of the ship’s owner, Vietnam Petroleum Transport JSC (VIPCO), are in Singapore working with local authorities to complete necessary procedures and defray the costs of bringing crewmembers home, including one dead sailor, Tran Duc Dat. According to Vu Bang, First Secretary of the Vietnamese Embassy in Singapore, the Embassy will be closely involved in the repatriation.

The ship, with 16 people on board, was attacked by pirates 70 nautical miles off Singapore’s coast while heading to Vietnam from Singapore. After the pirates left the ship, crewman Tran Duc Dat was found shot in the forehead in his private room. He was flown to a Singapore hospital but later died from his injuries. Singaporean authorities are probing the case and will announce the result of its investigation next week.
