(VOVWORLD) -US President Joe Biden pledged a peaceful transfer of power to President-elect Donald Trump on January 20th.

In his first speech to the nation following the election on Thursday he said he'd direct his administration to work with the president-elect's team for a "peaceful and orderly transition" of power.

"I will do my duty as president. I will fulfill my oath and I will honor the Constitution." "On January 20, we will have a peaceful transfer of power here in America."

“Campaigns are contests of competing visions. A country chooses one or the other," he said. "We accept the choice the country made."

Republican candidate Donald Trump secured victory with 312 electoral votes, while Democratic candidate Kamala Harris received 226.

The state electors will meet on December 17 to formally cast their votes, officially confirming Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States. The Electoral College results will be announced on January 6, 2025, with the inauguration scheduled for January 20, 2025.
