Witnesses said Israeli tanks and infantry advancing from the east side of Gaza City shelled residential buildings, sparking large fires. The Israeli military has not commented on the attacks.
Government and army leaders said on Wednesday the campaign will continue until Hamas surrenders, lays down its weapons, and releases its hostages.
At the Vatican on Friday, Pope Leo XIV renewed his call for an immediate ceasefire and an end to the conflict. In talks with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, he urged the pursuit of a two-state solution, calling it the “only way out of the war.”
