In a late-night address on Wednesday on national television, Colonel Amadou Abdramane, a spokesperson for the group announced that Bazoum had been removed from power and a nationwide curfew has been imposed. He said the defense and security force of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CLSP) have decided to put an end to Nigerien regime following the continuing deterioration of the security situation, and poor economic and social governance. The spokesman reaffirmed the group’s commitment to respect all commitments made by Niger in accordance with the principles of human rights.

He added that the country’s land and air borders are closed until the situation has stabilized, and from 10pm to 5am, there will be a nationwide blackout until further notice. The statement also warned against any foreign intervention.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres condemned the “unconstitutional” change of the government, calling for an immediate end to all actions undermining democratic principles in Niger, and urged all parties to refrain from violence and to respect the rule of law.

“The United Nations stands in solidarity with the democratically elected government and the people of Niger” he said.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken called for the immediate release of the president, stressing the US “resolutely supports” him, and added that the US would continue to engage with Niger and other nations “until the situation is resolved appropriately and peacefully”.

Meanwhile, the EU said it condemns any attempt to destabilise democracy and threaten the stability of Niger. French and Algerian foreign ministries said they are closely following the development of the situation and strongly condemn any attempt to seize power by force.
