India on nationwide high alert following Pakistani retaliation

(VOVWORLD) - India remains on heightened alert nationwide as tensions with Pakistan reach a critical level. On Saturday, authorities intensified security measures, particularly in the capital New Delhi and in the western border states, following a major Pakistani military response earlier in the day.

The Delhi government has suspended all public sector leave until further notice to ensure maximum preparedness. Police and security forces have been deployed en masse to public areas, while bomb squads have conducted security sweeps at key sites to prevent potential sabotage.

In the border states of Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir, schools have been closed and patrols significantly increased.

Tensions escalated dramatically after Pakistan launched Operation Bunyan un Marsoos—named after a Quranic reference to a "strong structure"—in retaliation for earlier Indian strikes. The operation reportedly targeted Indian military bases, including border airports and BrahMos missile storage facilities in Punjab, which Islamabad accused of being launch points for prior Indian attacks.

Amid fears of a broader conflict between the two nuclear-armed nations, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held separate calls with Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir and Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar, urging both sides to exercise restraint and seek diplomatic solutions.
