EU begins rollout of digital border system

(VOVWORLD) - The European Union began rolling out a new entry and exit system on Sunday at external borders, electronically registering data on non-EU nationals.

The Entry/Exit System (EES), an automated system that scans travellers’ passports and records their fingerprints and photograph, will be gradually introduced over six months.

The system will cover every EU country except Ireland and Cyprus, as well as Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.

The EES is expected to be fully operational by April 10, 2026, when traditional passport stamps will be completely replaced by electronic entries.
