Egypt to conduct referendum on new Constitution

He also said that more than 53 million voters will vote on the new Constitution by the middle of January 2014. The previous referendum on December 2012 drew just 50 million voters. Meanwhile, Minister of the Interior Mohamed Ibrahim said the military is taking necessary steps to maintain security at voting stations. Ibrahim said security forces will be tough when dealing with conflicts or any plots to disrupt the political transition process in Egpyt. In another development, Mohamed al-Gawady, one of the top leaders of the National Alliance Supporting Legitimacy (NASL) announced the establishment of an exiled Egyptian government led by Hisham Geneina, head of the Central Auditing Organization (CAO). The same day, hundreds of members of Students Against the Coup (SAC) supporting the Muslim Brotherhood movement and the “Ahrar” movement, conducted administration to protest the Ministry of Interior and the Egyptian Defense Minister Fattah Al-Sisi. Security forces had to use tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the protestors.
