The trip aimed to lobby the EC to advocate for the removal of the yellow card issued for illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities before the arrival of the IUU Inspection Team to conduct the 4th inspection in Vietnam.
Minister Hoan emphasized the Vietnamese government's commitment to developing a transparent, responsible, and sustainable agricultural sector, adding that Vietnam has established a comprehensive legal framework for fisheries management and combating IUU fishing through the promulgation of the Fisheries Law, and the implementation of a national database on fishing vessels connecting central and local levels.
Mr. Hoan asked the EU to swiftly remove the IUU yellow card for Vietnam, and to classify Vietnam as a low-risk group by recognizing its compliance with the new EU anti-deforestation regulations.
The Minister urged the EC to continue supporting Vietnam in its efforts to develop ecological, circular, and low-emission agriculture, transform livelihoods in the fishing industry, foster the sustainable growth of the marine economy, and promote biodiversity conservation and sustainable forest management.
Virginijus Sinkevičius, European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, said the EC will support Vietnam in the development of sustainable fisheries and transforming toward a green, circular, and environmentally friendly economy, adding that the EC aims to assist Vietnam in becoming a global model in sustainable fisheries development and combating IUU exploitation.
